After the November election, I sent this message to HD 36 Democrats- “As Chair, I feel like I should post something reassuring, hopeful and encouraging. I am so proud of the work we did to try and keep our country great, to allow important work to continue, and to make it possible for our neighbors to be safe and feel respected. The values we believe in are sound and right. The outcome of this election is a message that we cannot become complacent and we cannot ignore the grievances felt by those who have different beliefs. I am sad, I am fearful, I am dismayed, but I am NOT done!”
Today, First Lady Michelle Obama had this message for our young people, but I think we all need to hear it- “…don’t be afraid —- you hear me, young people? Don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise. Lead by example with hope, never fear.”
Well, like me, all of you reading this article have education and/or experience that can help lead us through an uncertain future. We need to shuck off our fear and focus our energy on protecting, helping, and supporting one another and the causes we believe in. If you are unsure about where to begin, you can start by learning about the issues that matter to you.
Each quarter, a portion of at least one meeting of the HD36 Democrats will be dedicated to increasing awareness and knowledge about important issues facing Alaskans. We are looking for presenters or resources on topics such as health care, insurance costs, climate mitigation, clean energy, civil rights, protecting our cultural heritage, increasing jobs, caring for those most at risk, and more. Please contact Terri Robbins at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have ideas or contacts who might be helpful.
We have an opportunity to make a difference. Won’t you join me?
Terri Robbins, Chair HD36 Democrats
